5 Xiaomi smartphones that prove that the design of phones has changed a lot in 10 years

The smartphone market is changing at breakneck speed. So much so that the smartphones of 11 years ago no longer have much to do with those of today. A look back at the evolution of Xiaomi smartphones, from the very first Mi 1 to the most recent.

11 years already. It was in 2011 that Xiaomi marketed its very first smartphone on the market, the Xiaomi Mi 1. A device only available in China. In 11 years, the smartphone market has evolved, and Xiaomi has not missed the boat. So much so that the manufacturer is one of the most innovative in terms of design, in particular by launching new trends, always at reasonable prices.

From the Xiaomi Mi 1, to the Xiaomi Mi 9T via the MI MIX laboratory range, a look back at the Chinese manufacturer’s most emblematic smartphones.

The Xiaomi Mi 1: the basis

Do you still remember the design of smartphones from 10 years ago? They didn’t have much to do with today’s smartphones. This is the case of the Xiaomi Mi 1, marketed in 2011.

Plastic back, thick edges, “large” 4-inch screen: we were then a long way from the “premiumizationof our current smartphones. But it must be said that at the time, we asked them much less. A phone was mainly used to communicate, simply browse the Internet, or even capture a few snapshots.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2: the arrival of curved screens

Over the years, smartphones have become overweight in order to integrate ever larger screens. To continue to increase the size of our screens, without increasing the weight of the devices, manufacturers have had the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčintegrating curved screens.

Released in 2015, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 was the manufacturer’s first smartphone to have such a screen. This allowed the side edges to be reduced to nothing, while providing an increased feeling of immersion. In terms of design, the first curved screens provided an unprecedented and impressive futuristic effect.

This trend was not just a fashion effect, since it lasted for many years. The proof, the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, released in 2019, also benefited from a beautiful curved screen.

The Redmi Note 7: accessible but beautiful

When it was released in 2019, the Redmi Note 7 conquered Frandroid’s editorial staff thanks to the quality of its technical sheet. The smartphone, sold around 200 euros, was rated 9/10 in terms of design during our test. A high and rare score at the time for phones sold at this price. The editorial staff then pointed out:a feeling of quality that we thought was unattainable at the price at which the smartphone is sold“.

Indeed, Xiaomi had equipped its smartphone with a glass back, protected by Gorilla Glass. Two rare and premium features for a phone sold at 200 euros at that time. Among the competition, there were still a lot of plastic frames.

This was not the only advantage of the Redmi Note 7, which also benefited from a teardrop notch, a notification LED, a USB-C port and even a jack port. Almost faultless.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T: goodbye to the front camera

How to optimize the occupation ratio of the front side of the screen while keeping the front camera? In 2019, we were not yet talking about a camera under the screen, but rather a motorized system. On the Xiaomi 9T, the selfie camera is housed in a retractable drawer located on the upper edge of the device.

Thanks to this mechanism, the camera appeared like this only when you needed it. The screen can thus occupy a larger surface, because it does not have to share space with a photo block. This technique also guaranteed a better level of confidentiality: if an application uses the front camera without your consent, it is impossible to miss it.

This is the first time that Xiaomi has used such a mechanism. But a little earlier in the year, the manufacturer had however marketed its MI MIX 3. Here too the front camera was hidden behind a mechanism. Except that this time, it’s the whole smartphone that slid to make room for the front sensors.

The MI MIX range: the most beautiful Xiaomi developments

And it is precisely on the side of the MI MIX range that Xiaomi comes out of the shackles. It is a sort of laboratory range, where each smartphone benefits from a unique innovation. Some of them were then widely democratized, such as the borderless screen found on the MI MIX 2 in 2017.

More recently, Xiaomi lifted the veil on its MI MIX 4, a phone unfortunately reserved for the Chinese market. His particuliarity ? It incorporates a front camera placed under the screen. The AMOLED panel that covers it then becomes transparent, in order to capture shots in the same way as a traditional sensor.

We already know that other manufacturers are also working on this solution. There is no doubt that this technology is likely to prevail on many phones in the coming years.
