Giving up sexual pleasure to appease an insecure man. Psychologists explain the mechanism of a widespread act, but about which we speak little.

An academic study published in January in the American journal Social Psychological and Personality Science dissects the reasons that lead the partner to fake an orgasm. The research, conducted with more than 600 heterosexual women, shows that many of them admit to giving up their own pleasure to appease an insecure man.

Jessica Jordan, who teaches psychology at the University of South Florida, led the study. She assures that “these women prioritize what they think are their partner’s needs at the expense of their own sexual needs and satisfaction”. The crux of the problem is therefore, originally, a lack of self-esteem coupled with a communication problem.

A woman’s anxiety increases as she perceives the fragility of her partner. This influences his libido, his pleasure and the frequency of his orgasms. “If she fears being a threat to her partner’s virility, this can lead to a breakdown in communication,” explains Jessica Jordan.

Money and sex

The findings of this new research show that women who make more money than their partner are twice as likely as others to fake an orgasm. Researchers speculated that women may feel they are financially emasculating their guy and therefore need to value him in the privacy of the bedroom.

However, the psychologist points out that lying, instead of protecting the partner, ends up hurting him: “When society creates a standard of masculinity that is impossible to maintain, no one wins”. Jessica Jordan’s next research will focus on men who have same-sex relationships, to find out how the notion of virility influences their sexual satisfaction.
