Faced with the Marvel Studios hydra and its prolific Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC (for Detective Comics) is attempting a diametrically opposed approach in 2022, that of “standalone” projects with the exception of The Flash. Is the Black Adam movie with The Rock so disconnected from the Justice League universe? Rumors suggest that Shazam and even Superman will make an appearance.

Summary

  • The return of Superman?
  • Black Adam: a very personal project for The Rock

The return of Superman?

Rumors are swirling about the DC Extended Universe (or DCEU), DC’s equivalent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU). Between the hypothetical return of Zack Snyder at the controls to concretize the Knightmare, a post-apocalyptic universe where Superman has become a tyrant (spoiler alert – Jim Lee denied), and the presence of this same Superman in the movie Black Adam, the fans no longer know where to turn. It must be said that they are sometimes at the origin of the craziest rumors, but also of the Director’s Cut among the most appreciated… the very existence of the Zack Snyder’s Justice League is an edifying proof of the power of passion.

Now back to the subject of the day… the presence or not of Shazam, sworn enemy of Black Adam, and of Superman in the film Black Adam. During an interview with our colleagues from Deadline, director Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise, Non-Stop) spoke about it and his words couldn’t be clearer. Shazam facing The Rock would not be on the program and even less Superman.

This film is an original story. (…) At the end of the film, Black Adam does not know who Shazam and Superman are. (…) He realizes that the world is full of superheroes. He has to adapt. – Jaume Collet-Serra (director – Black Adam)

Black Adam: a very personal project for The Rock

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is particularly keen on this film adaptation project of the character of Black Adam. In September 2014, the actor officially announced that he would wear the supervillain costume on the big screen. While he was initially to face Shazam in the eponymous film, the producers made the decision in 2017 to capitalize on the superstar and launch a spin-off project with of course The Rock as the headliner. Supposed to be released in December 2021, the feature film Black Adam is finally postponed to October 2022 following the repercussions of the health crisis.
