The Last of Us Remake: reworked graphics for the promise of greater immersion
In a video published earlier today, PlayStation takes stock for more than ten minutes of the new features included in the PlayStation 5 version of The Last of Us: Part I remake. To introduce them, the director of the saga Neil Druckmann indicates this :
While working on the flashbacks that appear in The Last of Us: Part II, we thought, “Wow, what could we do to make The Last of Us: Part 1 look so good if not is more than TLOU: Part 2?”
In this interview, he is accompanied by Shaun Escayg. He is the creative director and one of the writers of this remake. He says the PlayStation 5 is a great toolkit that they (the Naughty Dog developers) can take advantage of: 4K, a rate of 60 frames per second, HDR technology (which affects brightness)… Enough to offer, according to him, reworked characters (facial animations, graphic details) as well as a much more immersive atmosphere than before.
In any case, the three interviewees agree to say one thing: the PlayStation 3, the console that hosted the original game, was not powerful enough for their ambitions. It is thanks to the PlayStation 5 and its many features that they can provide something much more consistent with their vision of the title.

But besides the graphics, many gameplay-related changes have been made. This is Matthew Gallant, game director, who talks about it in this video. First, he explains that the physics of surrounding objects is much more present: a feature considered “like a dream before”. He then takes the example of the installed turret which destroys everything in its path, once again promising greater immersion in the adventure of Joël and Ellie. Another promise on the side of Naughty Dog: an artificial intelligence promised as much more sophisticated, whether for enemies or friends.
In addition, this remake of The Last of Us also includes two new modes. A permanent deathwhich should delight players whose immersion is broken in the event of a defeat. It is also a mode speed run, allowing you to time yourself, which has been added. Naughty also highlights the addition of accessibility options (audio description during cutscenes for example).
Finally, the last part of this interview is devoted to the functionalities provided by the accessories of the PlayStation 5. The 3D audio is then mentioned, which should allow players to hear enemies before seeing them, but also the many haptic feedbacks ( vibrations) integrated into the title. Of course, the DualSense’s adaptive triggers will also be used: each firearm will have a particular resistance, while that of the arc will grow as the voltage increases.
New features that will satisfy players? In recent days, the controversy has swelled following the leak of the key setting screen: there would not be the possibility of dodging or crawling, as is the case in the second opus. An absence that hurts, especially since some consider the price of this remake to be unjustified.
Nevertheless, Neil Druckmann concludes his video by explaining that it is “the definitive edition” to fully appreciate The Last of Us: Part 1. Final answer on September 2, with the release of the title on PlayStation 5. A PC version is planned, but the release date is still unknown.
