Spaghetti, string? This photo of NASA on Mars intrigues

SPACE – This could almost pass for a ball of yarn or a tuft of hair. NASA’s Perseverance rover currently on Mars fell on July 12 on an object that leaves experts a little perplexed. If the photo, which you can see at the top of this article, is intriguing, it still has the beginning of an explanation…

Perseverance is connected to a parachute by a rope, which allows it to land smoothly. The most likely explanation would therefore be that a piece of this rope broke.

“Perseverance had not previously been in the area where the string was found, so it is likely that the wind blew it there,” a spokesperson for the Perseverance mission told AFP at Jet. NASA Propulsion Laboratory. Moreover, four days after this discovery, Perseverance returned to this place and the object had disappeared.

It would not be the first time that Perseverance came face to face with objects that allowed him to land. Last June, another photo showed what at first glance looks like a piece of aluminum foil, wedged between two red stones. It was actually a piece of thermal insulation that had been used to land the robot.

An oasis on Mars

Perseverance’s objective in this area is to find a trace of life. The territory in question is actually the delta of a river that scientists believe flowed into a huge lake billions of years ago.

Instead of the lake today: Jezero Crater, where the rover landed in February 2021.

It was in this crater that he was able to photograph, in April, the parachute itself.

The small helicopter on board for the trip, called Ingenuity, for its part captured even more impressive images in flight: not only the parachute, but also the rear shield which contained the latter before its deployment. The shield appears heavily damaged by the impact suffered when touching the ground, after having fulfilled its mission.

NASA then commented that these images “may help to allow safer landings in the future”.
