The warm and powerful voice of the interpreter of Big Mama Thornton has gone out: Shonka Dukureh died at the age of 44, while the biopic of Elvis is currently on the screen.

The director of the hit biopic starring Austin Butler, Baz Lhurmann reacted this morning by posting two photos of the actress and gospel singer on her Instagram account, and paying tribute to her on behalf of the entire film crew. “A special light that went out today” he wrote, “From the moment she entered our lives, Shonka brought joy, intelligence and of course, her voice and her music. […] One of Shonka’s favorite words was ‘blessed’ and I believe that along with the entire Elvis team, we were truly blessed to spend time with her.”
