Quidditch changes name

To get rid of the aura of JK Rowling, the American Quidditch leagues formalize a name change.

fans ofHarry Potter have several ways to express their love for the saga of JK Rowling. Since the publication of the novels and the release of the films, some have decided to adapt the iconic sport of wizards: Quidditch. Among Muggles, this practice is even gaining popularity across the globe. Since 2012, several World Cups have been organised.

Nevertheless, some leagues want to take a little distance with the author. Following certain controversial statements by JK Rowling on transidentity, many teams and associations have shared their desire to dissociate themselves from the license.

Don’t say Quidditch anymore…

Two American leagues have formalized this name change. The governing bodies of American Quidditch and Major League Quidditch said that all of this obviously had to do with the author’s positions… but not only. They also cite the difficulty for leagues to find sponsorship and proper broadcasting, as the Quidditch name was trademarked by Warner Bros.

Moreover, the United States will not be the only ones to apply this change. The international league should also change the name of this practice. From now on, we will have to talk about Quadball.

It must be said that the sport is quite innovative, allowing players of different genders to be on the same team. It is also notified in the rules “that a team cannot have more than four players of the same gender on the pitch at the same time.” Quadball is also known to be very inclusive, allowing players who do not wish to be defined by gender identity to do so.

Warner Bros continues to support JK Rowling

While the controversy swells around the author, the studios show total support for JK Rowling. Interviewed by Variety in early June, a representative for the company stated:

“Warner Bros. has enjoyed a creative, productive and fulfilling partnership with JK Rowling for the past 20 years. She is one of the world’s most accomplished authors, and we’ve been proud to bring her characters, her vision, and her world to life for decades now.”

There is therefore little chance that Warner Bros will question this partnership, at a time when we are still awaiting news of Fantastic Beasts 4. The last film written by Rowling and directed by David Yates was not a a resounding success at the worldwide box office. He only reported $405.2 million internationally.

However, it is difficult to say whether Rowling’s statements are responsible for this failure. The departure of Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald also caused a lot of reaction on social networks. It should be noted that in any case, the saga is far from having the popularity of its elder. The second part of the adventures of Nobert Dragonneau had simply brought in 654 million dollars, against 812 million for the first.
