Before it became a benchmark in the action/stealth genre, the Metal Gear Solid (MGS) saga had to make a name for itself. Released more than 30 years ago on the MSX2 machine in Japan, the second part of the series was almost never called Metal Gear 2!

Hideo Kojima, the father of the franchise, indeed reveals on his Twitter account that he did not want to call the game Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. It is actually a compromise found between the genius designer and the Konami company to meet both marketing demands and satisfy the creator of the game. Hideo Kojima intended to title this sequel “in the manner of Indiana Jones”, that is to say, by keeping only the name of the main character: Solid Snake.

“METAL GEAR2 SOLID SNAKE” has been on the market for 32 years already? In fact, I had planned to title this sequel Indiana Jones style, just with the name of the main character.

I didn’t want to put “METAL GEAR2” in the title, but the sales staff told me to put “METAL GEAR2” in the title! So we ended up having both.

Since the release of the franchise’s most iconic installment on PlayStation, the series is more often referred to as “Metal Gear Solid”, but if Hideo Kojima had had the last word on the choice of the title, it is indeed the character of Solid Snake who would have deserved the honor of appearing alone on the cover of the game. Released only on MX2 in Japan in 1990, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snakethe continuation of the “tactical espionage game” Metal Gear published by Konami had to wait years before being published in French in the game Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on PS2 then in the compilations Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

The storyline sees Colonel Roy Campbell, commander of the Fox Hound special forces unit, send Solid Snake to Zanzibar, a Central Asian nation controlled by a group of mercenaries, to rescue a scientist who has fallen into the wrong hands. Whether Hideo Kojima is responsible for both the script and game design of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snakeso he will not have had the last word on the choice of title.

With the celebrations around the 35th anniversary of the series, could we not hope to see the announcement of a remake of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake?
