Heat wave: this scene on British TV is worthy of “Don’t Look Up”

GLOBAL WARMING – If there is a sequel toDon’t Look Up, John Hammond will have its place in the casting. This British meteorologist was invited by British television on July 14 to discuss the historic heat wave. And he was not taken seriously at all by the facilitator who asked him to play down the situation, as you can see in our video at the top of the article.

The staggering scene was broadcast on the ultra-conservative GB News channel. Presenter Bev Turner interviewed the meteorologist as the United Kingdom prepared to record a heat peak on July 19, exceeding 40°C, unheard of among our British neighbors.

“Potentially Deadly Time”

John Hammond wanted to warn viewers that the heat wave was going to be on an unprecedented scale, with serious consequences, especially for the elderly. “At the start of next week, forget about 20 degrees. It could well be 40 degrees. I think there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of additional deaths next week. The graphics I can see are scary. We all like good weather but it won’t be good weather. It will be potentially deadly weather for a few days. It will be brief, but it will be brutal”, he warned before being brutally interrupted by the host on set.

“Oh John, I want us to be happy with this weather! I don’t know if anything has happened to meteorologists to make you all a bit fatalistic and harbingers of doom,” she quipped.

A sequence that instantly brings to mind the film Don’t Look Up by Adam McKay. In this Netflix movie, two scientists Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) alert the public to a comet heading straight for Earth. They are notably invited on the set of Daily Rip to talk about it. But the presenters embodied by Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry make fun of the scientists, preferring to laugh at the situation, rather than understanding the consequences of their discovery.

On Twitter, many Internet users made the connection, castigating the GB News news channel and its presenter Bev Turner.

“This level of stupidity on a news channel should be illegal. Ignorant Clowns”

“It’s terrifying. GB News has clearly never seen Don’t Look Up. All credit to @hammondweather who remained 100% professional in the face of this nonsense.”

“I don’t think we should talk lightly about it”

Meteorologist John Hammond refused to minimize the impact of this heat wave, as the presenter asked him.

“I don’t think we should talk lightly about the fact that a lot of people are going to die early next week from the heat wave. 40°C, I fear that this country is simply not prepared to face such a temperature.”

As announced by John Hammond on July 14, it was well over 40°C in the United Kingdom on Tuesday July 19. This is 1.6°C higher than the previous British record, which dated from July 2019 with 38.7°C.

In France also some television passages seem straight out of the film Don’t Look Up. In an excerpt from the show 28 minutes dating from October 2021, journalist Salomé Saqué had been mocked when she warned of the climate catastrophe. More recently, Sasha, an environmental activist, was taken to task by Apolline de Malherbe on RMC, in a particularly violent sequence.
